Bulgaria has a number of magnificent courses, great weather in the summer months and very reasonable green fees.  The country recently hosted a European Tour event, signifying its arrival as a serious golfing destination contender.  Add into that the ease of travel to Bulgaria and the standard and rates at its excellent hotels and you are onto a winner.

Lighthouse Golf and Spa Hotel

This is a true 5 star destination, set on a course designed by the golfing great and US Masters winner Ian Woosnam.  The setting is right on the Black Sea Coast in the resort of Balchik and offers great sea views.   The hotel boasts luxury rooms and apartments and all the facilities you might expect in a five star hotel.  Views are of the course, the pool and the sea.  The spa here is fantastic, as are the bars, restaurants and facilities… and of course a magnificent clubhouse.

Balchik is a Black Sea coast resort situated on a bay. There are several small beaches and a selection of bars and restaurants. The Balchik Palace and the botanical gardens are worth visiting.

Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort

This resort contains two villages, either side of a magnificent lake and in view of the sea.

The Thracian Cliffs is a four star hotel around a unique golf course.  The great Gary Player said of the course, “You will not find a golf course like this anywhere else on the planet!” and the location has been compared to Kauai Island in Hawaii. The hotel itself boasts seven unbelievable restaurants right on the water’s edge, serving high quality dishes and the service is excellent.  Truly, this is a magnificent resort that will leave you with fantastic memories of your holiday.

The nearby all-inclusive Topola Skies Resort is also connected to the same course.  The hotel enjoys a privileged position with superb views over the sea and the golf course and an infinity pool.  In addition to golfing, the Topola Skies Resort offers tennis, a fitness centre with spa, kids’ club, games room and lots of entertainment to keep the family occupied.

Sofia

The historical capital city of Sofia is less than an hour away from the hotel. The city is very interesting, with many historical museums and churches for sightseeing.  It is also an easy city to get around on foot.  By night, Sofia comes to life with many trendy bars and quality restaurants.  And just a footnote on Sofia, it is perhaps the least expensive capital city in Europe for drinks and eating out.

To combine your golf with a more relaxed environment yet not too far from the big city, check out..

Car Hire

Car Hire in Bulgaria is very reasonably priced and all major international car hire companies are represented, particularly at  the airports.  Be aware that driving in Bulgaria, particularly in the cities can be a little scary as the road quality is not up to UK standards and roads are not usually marked.   Also, locals tend to drive in a way that might be considered  reckless.  The best advice if you intend to hire a car is to drive defensively!
If you decide to visit, enjoy your stay.
