Interview: Amanda The Explorer
Here is the second in our series of brief interviews with influential Travel Bloggers. This week’s interview is with the lovely Amanda, of Amanda The Explorer, whose Tumblr should should definitely follow if you don’t already.
What is your first memory of traveling?
I have been traveling literally my entire life. My father lived in Venezuela when I was a kid so my sister and I would spend our summers there. I can’t pinpoint my first memory exactly but I do remember a lot of summers on the beaches buying grape ice cream from vendors and drinking straight out of coconuts.
Is there anywhere you wouldn’t ever travel to (or return to)?
No. If given the opportunity I would go anywhere in the world. I’m sure there are some places that I would leave and not be dying to get back to but I’m not about to dismiss any destination without trying it out. I want to experience all the world has to offer, good and bad.
What one tip would you give those writing about travel?
Write as if you are writing for yourself in the future. Put down anything you consider to be memorable, even if you think your readers might find it insignificant.
Do you write as you travel or wait until you return?
I write as I travel. Sometimes I get a bit behind though. I think if I were to wait to get back I would have forgotten way too much and everything would be mixed up, especially when I take long trips to multiple destinations.
Who inspires you to write?
My family. Time zones, lack of wifi, and limited hours in the day make it difficult for me to call and update them very often, but I want them to be involved in my travels. My blog is a great way for everyone to know what I’m doing.
What, other than a passport, can you not travel without?
My camera. I try to document everything with pictures just as much as I do with writing.
Are you an organized traveller or do you wander?
I’m pretty organized, it’s less expensive to be organized. I don’t plan out my day-to-day activities but I always know where I’m staying and how to get there. I love finding a good deal and I am obsessed with peer-reviews of accommodations so it has worked out for me to book in advance.
Where do you plan on travelling to next?
I’m in Munich at the moment and I have a little over a month left in Europe. The plan is: Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, Brussels, Nice, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Paris, and lastly London. Whew!
