Interview: Robin Locker of My Melange

This weeks interview is with Robin of My Melange. Interestingly Robin had no strong desire to travel until she watched Under the Tuscan Sun

What is your first memory of traveling?

My first memory of travel, in terms of a large family vacation, was a trip to Walt Disney World when I was about 10 years old. We all took Amtrak from New York to Orlando- a 23 hour trip.  While I remember getting a terrible sunburn in Disney itself, my favorite memory was the whole train experience.  I’d open my eyes in the middle of the night to see the unrecognizable landscape whizzing by at about 150 miles per hour.  In the morning we awoke to waiters walking up and down the narrow aisles, balancing their trays while serving breakfast. They never spilled a drop of anything.  And the French Toast was to die for!

Is there anywhere you wouldn’t ever travel to (or return to)?

There are so many places I would LOVE to explore, but unfortunately, the long flights may prohibit me from actually going, as I am not the best flier. The spirit is there, but the flesh might not be willing. Kyoto Japan, India, Australia and anywhere in French Polynesia make that list. I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to go to Las Vegas. Gambling and showgirls just ain’t my thing.

What one tip would you give those writing about travel?

Don’t forget the photos. I think it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words.  So often I don’t make it through a long, yet interesting piece covering a destination, simply because there was never a photo to draw me in or make me want to know more about the place.

Do you write as you travel or wait until you return?

Actually both. I’m always taking good notes, so I guess part of that can be considered ‘writing’. Sometimes the quick play-by-play stories, like a restaurant or hotel review, is best if written right away, when the experience is vivid and fresh in my mind.  But, after I return from a trip and when the collection of experiences has time to sink in, another good story idea will pop up.  I think that’s the fun of writing.  Some trips can have a new and deeper meaning, which result in new story angles many years later.

Who inspires you to write?

Without naming names - there are so many talented travel writers that I look up to and who inspire me to not only write, but write better.  I’d say that having an audience, however large or small, inspires me to write as well.  As long as my work can be useful and helpful to others and there are folks reading, I’ll be motivated to keep writing.

What, other than a passport, can you not travel without?

My trusted Tumi wheelie carry-on bag, a digital camera, a pen and a notebook.

Are you an organized traveler or do you wander?

Again, I’d say a bit of both.  It depends on the circumstances and my travel goals.  I’m organized in that I need to have set hotel reservations and a good idea of what I need and want to do or see during my travels.  If I am short on time, it helps me to be extremely organized, so that I can make sure I am able to collect the info I need.  But I do try to build time into my itinerary to just wander.  Take photos, get lost, pay attention to the sounds, people and aromas around you.  You need that time.  That is generally where the memorable moments and the unexpected magic happens. Many a great, even humorous story, has been born from something that wasn’t planned.

Where do you plan on traveling to next?

Being that my twin passions are France and Italy, rest assured it will be one of those.  If I were a betting person, I’d say most likely Italy.  I’m dying to get to the Italian Riviera, the Piedmont region and I also have some friends in Calabria that I have been wanting to visit.

Many thanks to Robin for agreeing to take part. Stay tuned for more Travel interviews in the next few weeks. Let me know if you wish to be interviewed :)

Interview: Forgot My Head

What is your first memory of travelling?

Probably the night market in Taiwan, when I was 5.  Seems like that’s all I’m talking about right now because I finally had the chance to return after about 10 years, but it was just as amazing as I had remembered.  I love all the bright lights, happy people and the food!  Oh the food is so good.

Is there anywhere you wouldn’t ever travel to (or return to)?

Thinking about this question, YES YES YES.  I never want to go back to anything that resembles an all-inclusive resort.  My family decided to go to the Dominican Republic one year and do that whole thing, and to be honest it was pretty boring.  It wasn’t a bad experience that I’m running away from (neither is it that I was 14 and hanging out with my parents, I love them!), I just like to get out and have a taste of what life is like somewhere else.

What one tip would you give those writing about travel?

Use lots of pictures!  I don’t know about you, but I get really bored just looking at a screen full of words.  Actually, on that note, here’s a pile of turtles at Hanshan temple in Suzhou, China.  I like the guy on the right, it looks like he’s flying.

Do you write as you travel or wait until you return?

I like to write as I’m going, but it doesn’t always work out that way.  I prefer to spend a little time when I write, upload photos, check that what I’m writing actually makes sense and isn’t a lie…so sometimes it has to wait.

Who inspires you to write?

Honestly, I think I probably started my blog (and then neglected it because I’m great that way) because I stumbled upon a blog called Wisecraft.  I really enjoy her laid back style of writing, just like she’s talking to friends.  I love the idea of people from everywhere sharing and reading about each other.  It’s just so cool!  I guess I write in the hopes that someone will pass by and say, “hey, awesome, we should be friends.”  LOL

What, other than a passport, can you not travel without?

Omg, my Nintendo DS.  I would go crazy on the plane without it.  Does it sound better if I say it’s been helping me learn Chinese?

Are you an organized traveller or do you wander?

Maybe a bit of both.  I like to have an idea of where I want to go, sites I want to see before it’s time to return home.  I usually get as much information as possible (how to get there, hours, cost) so I know what’s going on, but sometimes I get totally distracted by something else on the way.  An organized wanderer?

Where do you plan on travelling to next?

I would love to go to Japan next time I travel.  I guess I’m kind of concentrating on one part of the world…but I think I’m on kind of a “rediscovering that I’m half Asian” kick.  In reality, my next trip will probably be to the east coast to visit a friend in New Brunswick, I already promised!

Many thanks to Sam for agreeing to be interviewed. Go and read her blog if you haven’t already.

What is your first memory of travelling?

Many happy family camping holidays in France.

Is there anywhere you wouldn’t ever travel to (or return to)?

I like to keep an open mind but I prefer to avoid destinations which carry significant danger.

Find a niche that interests you. A particular angle that sets you apart from everyone else.

Do you write as you travel or wait until you return?

Both.

Who inspires you to write?

Since I wrote for both work and pleasure… my family.

What, other than a passport, can you not travel without?

Aside from the obvious things such as money, camera, etc…. my family.

I like to plan trips in advance but not feel that I have to keep to a rigid schedule once I arrive.

Interview: Amanda The Explorer

Here is the second in our series of brief interviews with influential Travel Bloggers. This week’s interview is with the lovely Amanda, of Amanda The Explorer, whose Tumblr should should definitely follow if you don’t already.

What is your first memory of traveling?

I have been traveling literally my entire life.  My father lived in Venezuela when I was a kid so my sister and I would spend our summers there. I can’t pinpoint my first memory exactly but I do remember a lot of summers on the beaches buying grape ice cream from vendors and drinking straight out of coconuts.

Is there anywhere you wouldn’t ever travel to (or return to)?

No. If given the opportunity I would go anywhere in the world. I’m sure there are some places that I would leave and not be dying to get back to but I’m not about to dismiss any destination without trying it out. I want to experience all the world has to offer, good and bad.

What one tip would you give those writing about travel?

Write as if you are writing for yourself in the future.  Put down anything you consider to be memorable, even if you think your readers might find it insignificant.

Do you write as you travel or wait until you return?

I write as I travel.  Sometimes I get a bit behind though.  I think if I were to wait to get back I would have forgotten way too much and everything would be mixed up, especially when I take long trips to multiple destinations.

Who inspires you to write?

My family. Time zones, lack of wifi, and limited hours in the day make it difficult for me to call and update them very often, but I want them to be involved in my travels.  My blog is a great way for everyone to know what I’m doing.

What, other than a passport, can you not travel without?

My camera.  I try to document everything with pictures just as much as I do with writing.

Are you an organized traveller or do you wander?

I’m pretty organized, it’s less expensive to be organized.  I don’t plan out my day-to-day activities but I always know where I’m staying and how to get there.  I love finding a good deal and I am obsessed with peer-reviews of accommodations so it has worked out for me to book in advance.

Where do you plan on travelling to next?

I’m in Munich at the moment and I have a little over a month left in Europe.  The plan is: Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, Brussels, Nice, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Paris, and lastly London.  Whew!
