Explore historic ruins
History buffs will love exploring the ruined castles and fortresses across Majorca. Dating from the 14th century, Capdepera Castle, located in the town of the same name, was originally built to protect residents from invading pirates. Located in the north east of the island, have a wander around the town square before climbing the stone steps to the castle above.
For something even older, check out the Roman remains of Pollentia in Alcudia. During the Roman period this was the most important city in the Balearics and its layout is still in evidence today. A theatre, forum and residential area are open for the public to visit and there is also a museum which houses objects discovered on the site.
Take a hike
The dramatic landscape of Majorca is the perfect territory for energetic mountain hikes. For tough and rugged terrain walk the Tramuntana mountain range in the west of the island or, for a more gentle hike visit the Serra de Llevant mountains in the east. In recent years the government has recognized Majorca’s potential as a hiker’s paradise and invested money in the upkeep of walking routes. Trails are signposted, and there are myriad paths all across the island, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Majorca may not be widely known for its wine, but the island has a number of vineyards which produce some top-notch tipple. The best way to visit these is by train, as a specialist wine tour is available, departing from the Macia Batle winery in Santa Maria del Cami. Visit a number of vineyards on route and dine at El Convent del Marques, a restaurant set in a 16th century palace. This tour is popular, especially during summer, so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Shop ‘til you drop
If holidaying in Majorca make sure you leave space in your suitcase as the island is a top destination for some retail therapy. Traditional items can be bought from specialist shops and markets: Manacor has a thriving pearl industry and shops sell jewellery at a snip, woven baskets can be found in Arta and Capdepera, and Inca is the place to pick up leather shoes and goods for a fraction of the cost elsewhere. Label lovers on the other hand should spend time in Palma with its designer shop-lined Avenida Jaime II, boasting Huge Boss, Cartier and Montblanc stores.
