When most people imagine Australia they picture the Outback, or perhaps Uluru, but Australia is actually a very diverse landscape dotted with beautiful mountain ranges. The tallest of these are the famous Australian Alps, located in southeastern Australia and spanning the regions of New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. The Australian alps are sometimes divided into two ranges, the Snowy Mountains and the Victorian Alps, and are sometimes referred to by those names.

The great outdoors is accessible via a number of hiking trails, parks and nature reserves. Kosciuszko National Park in the New South Wales area contains Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s tallest mountain.
The region as a whole is considered an important bird area by BirdLife International and the forests are home to breeding populations of Flamerobins and Pilotbirds. A network of Alpine Huts exists, dating back to old cattle ranching days, and is maintained by volunteers for use by hikers for much of the year.
The region is also a popular destination for fly fishing, as it contains many alpine ponds and streams.
The Australian Alps are the only place on the continent where the altitude is high enough for regular deep snow fall, and as such the only area in Australia for downhill skiing. Skiing has been popular in the region for over a century, and the season typically runs from June to October. The Victoria region features the most ski resorts, while New South Wales features some of the oldest, including Perisher, the country’s largest ski resort.
Travel Considerations
The Australian Alps are easy to access, and Christchurch is a popular landing city for out of country visitors. With so many scenic destinations to choose from, it is easy to plan your own walking or driving tour of the mountains, but you will get more out of the experience with a guide. Some areas offer walking tours with native guides. The less physically inclined will appreciate a guided, inclusive tour package such as those offered by ANZCRO, which do an excellent job of picking out some of the highlights of the area.
